Skills Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR)

Project Description

This is a low-cost land restoration technique where we work with farmers to protect and manage naturally growing trees on their farms. Instead of planting new trees, they help existing ones grow back and thrive, restoring degraded lands in the process.

Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) is a simple but powerful method of restoring land that has been degraded over time. Instead of planting new trees, farmers identify and protect naturally growing shoots and trees on their farms. They manage these trees by pruning, spacing, and allowing them to grow properly, which helps improve soil fertility, brings back biodiversity, and increases farm productivity. This project is especially important in dry areas where tree survival is low. We train and support farmers to adopt this method and show them the long-term benefits.

We partner with Friends of FMNR, who offer technical support, training resources, and help us scale this approach to more communities. Through this collaboration, we were introduced to this technique, and we aim to reach more farmers and spread awareness on how natural regeneration can be part of everyday farming practices. FMNR is not just about trees; it’s about restoring hope and resilience on the land.
